Elephant Club in the Dóri House!
A new sibling supporting group is launched by the Light Of My Eye Foundation in March. Our club is open for every child whose sibling suffers from a serious illness or already passed.
In monthly sessions, children can relax and have the opportunity to share their anxieties and fears and ask their questions as well. Meetings of children in similar situation in a protected environment will initiate some kind of self-help process that supports the children’s healthy mental development.
A serious illness or loss of a child affects the whole family: father, mother, and siblings. It’s hard for the sick child’s healthy sibling because the parents’ attention is drawn – understandably - to the care of the sick child. Siblings often won’t share their concerns and thoughts because they don’t want to make their parent’s situation even harder with their own problems. This is why we would like to create a protected environment for them where they can share their fears and feelings about being a sibling. This means a lot for the children, their anxiety can dissolve and they can feel less lonely.
Why the elephant? These wonderful animals never forget their companions, they recognize them from the perspective of 40-50 years. Remembering is of utmost importance for our sibling supporting program in several respects; encounters provide the opportunity to recall and care for the memories of children, furthermore these encounters are such experiences in themselves that can later become strengthening memories.
The group is available for children from 6 to 18 years of age. They can join the group any time, even those can join who have already participated in the Elephant Club. Sessions are usually held once a month on a Saturday. In the Elephant Club, brothers and sisters have the opportunity to participate in many entertaining games with the guidance of professionals, to think together and talk about their experiences of being a sibling. Please note that although it could have therapeutic effects, this group work is basically not a therapy. Children can lean on each other and make new friends. The most important thing is to have fun: to play and participate in craft, skill and other exercises.
The first meeting will be held on March 19 between 14:00 and 16:00 in Pécs, at Rácvárosi út 37. This time we are preparing for an Easter program for children.
